Seemingly endlessly beset by legal wrangling and political in-fighting, the South African Department of Home Affairs has now delivered 'Final Immigration Regulations', the ultimate interpretation of Immigration Amendment Act No 19 of 2004.Essentially, this new immigration policy seeks to achieve the following government objectives:
Firstly, it seeks to discourage illegal migration into South Africa by encouraging foreign nationals to apply for different permits to legalise their stay in the country;
Secondly, it intends to create an enabling environment for foreign direct investment into South Africa; and
Thirdly, it seeks to attract scarce skills required by the economy in accordance with the 2014 vision of eradicating poverty and underdevelopment.
Minister of Home Affairs Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula says the immigration legislation will contribute towards boosting direct foreign investment, attraction of skills required by the economy, support the growth of tourism and support the emphasis and realisation of the goals of the South African government's foreign policies.
Exactly how this affects the financial requirements for the Retirement and Business permits, which many Brits use to start a new life in South Africa, will be covered in the next edition of Emigrate Now and South Africa News - so stay tuned!
